PDS is pleased to announce that it has been awarded $10,000 from the Paula Nye Memorial Bicycle and Pedestrian Education Grant. Funds will be used to educate citizens about bicycle and pedestrian safety and to raise awareness for the upcoming bicycle and pedestrian planning project.
Respondents during the Direction 2030 plan expressed their desire to have safe access to multiple forms of transportation. These desires were reflected in the plan’s goals and objectives and recommendations such as “increase operational safety and facility opportunities for cyclists and pedestrians,” found within the Mobility section of the plan. While the grant is not eligible for infrastructure construction, it does provide funds for education and outreach.
PDS staff will use the grant in a multifaceted approach including; public service announcements on Time-Warner Cable’s network, outreach to public officials in the form of an educational video and face-to-face staff interaction, and a social media / internet outreach program for enhanced interaction with the community.
The application for the grant was part of a joint effort between NKU and PDS. Staff worked with Thomas Jacobs, a second year Master of Public Administration student, to craft a successful proposal for this outreach effort.
The Paula Nye Grant was established to improve the safety of non-motorized (bicycle and pedestrian) transportation and is funded solely by contributions of Kentuckians purchasing the “Share the Road” specialty license plate.
