Plan4Health Fall 2015 Update

Kimmy's Grocery - Covington, KYThe Kenton County Plan 4 Health Coalition continues to make progress. The Corner Store Initiative, a program whose aim is to increase to the availability of healthy and nutritious foods at corner stores, has two stores under contract. Led by the Center of Great Neighborhoods (CGN), he initiative uses grant money to purchase new equipment or retrofit the existing layout of a store to accommodate healthy food options in places where such options were not available. The target areas for investment are stores located in those areas of the City of Covington that have little to no access to a full service grocery store – also known as a food desert. The two stores currently under contract include Kimmy’s Corner, located at 873 Main Street in the Mainstrasse Neighborhood of Covington, and Guitierrez Deli, located at 1131 Lee Street in the Westside neighborhood of Covington.

Guiterrez Deli - Covington, KYThe coalition partners at Planning and Development Services of Kenton County (PDS) have been diligently working on hiring a marketing consultant to conduct a four month campaign across the county that focuses on the benefits of incorporating healthy and nutritious foods into your daily diet. PDS has also been collaborating with the Kenton County Food Policy working group to plan a summit that will take place in April or 2015. The summit will focus on topics affecting the food system in Kenton County, addressing issues pertaining to food production and distribution, as well as food consumption and what is done with food waste.

The Kenton County Plan4Health Coalition welcomes the opportunity to connect with community members. If you would like to learn more about the project or provide input regarding specific coalition objective, please reach out to Mike Ionna AICP, Principal Planner at PDS.
